Das Thema ist das in einer Situation Gegebene, der Kommentar, das Neue, die Information für den Hörer. Bei Hockett bilden Th. u. K. die Struktur der prädikativen Konstruktion:

the speaker announces a topic and then says something about it. Thus John / ran away; That new book by Thomas Guernsey / I havn’t read yet (³1960, S. 201).

Die Charakterisierung nach Th. und K. deckt sich nicht mit der Subjekt-Prädikat-Struktur. - Brekle (1970, S. 128 ff.) betrachtet Th. u. K.-Strukturen im Gegensatz zu Chomsky (1965) als zweite satzsemantische Ebene im tiefenstrukturellen bereich.» [Lewandowski, Th., Bd. 3, S. 770-771]
